Do You Know What’s in Your Beauty Products?

What are Parabens and Phthalates?

The two most common and potentially harmful ingredients in your cosmetics and skin care products are Parabens and Phthalates. Manufacturers claim their ingredients are safe in controlled amounts, but what they don’t tell you are the side effects from long term use. Because they’ve only been used for the last 15 to 20 years, we are only now beginning to understand the long term health issues.

Parabens (Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben) are the most widely used preservatives in personal care products. They inhibit bacteria and other microbes from growing in your favorite creams, cleansers and lipsticks. Cosmetics companies used to use formaldehydes as preservatives but that practice had to stop because formaldehydes are now classifed as a carcinogen. Enter the paraben, a cheaper alternative they could easily manufacture in labs.

Phthalates are chemical plasticizers that are used to soften plastics so they feel soft and look luxurious. They’re used in lotions, shampoos and cosmetics to lubricate and soften the skin. Because phthalates are not chemically bound to the plastics they soften, they are slowly but continuously released into the air. Have you ever noticed that some plastic products harden over time? That’s because the phthalates have leached out of it. Where do you think they go once they leach out? Into the air we breath and into our lungs.

How Bad Can They Really Be?

The biggest risk associated with phthalates and parabens are how easily they penetrate the skin and how easily they can enter our system. Based on growing evidence that they interfere with our hormone function, the European Commission on endocrine disruption has listed phthalates & parabens as Category 1 priority substances. They have learned that phthalates and parabens can mimic human estrogen and have found them in human breast cancer tissues, suggesting a growing link to cancer. Nordic and Asian countries have started banning the use of them in soaps and skin care products but North America has been slow to react.

Lastly, Methyl Paraben applied on the skin reacts with UVB (Ultra Violet B) rays to create greater free radical proliferation leading to higher levels of oxidative stress. This means that your current anti-aging and skin care products are probably making your skin age faster, not slower!

“Chances are your current skin care products are                                                           probably make your skin age faster, not slower!”

Why Do Manufacturers Use Parabens & Phthalates?

The answer is simple and it probably won’t surprise you. Parabens & Phthalates are the cheapest and most readily available chemicals to produce. Plant based preservatives would cost 4 times as much to produce and they would have to depend on farms to harvest enough plants to sustain growth. Of course, they decided to go with profits.

Here’s the the good news; a growing number of consumers are now demanding the removal of chemicals and brands are starting to listen.

But while traditional brands looking to protect their profits are slower to respond, it’s the smaller boutique brands that are leading the natural revolution!

So What Are Our Options?

“That is the number one question that we are hearing at Sephora. Parabens and Phthalates are definitely hot topics but better and more natural ingredients in general are at the forefront of Sephora’s push toward higher quality brand partners.” Says Patrice

But according to Patrice, it can’t just be about natural ingredients. Brands must prove that their products are effective and safe for long term use.

“We find that the new and most effective approach is to protect the cells responsible for regeneration, to repair the damaged structures and to maintain the right levels of activity for the self-repairing enzymes, all with a goal toward more natural ingredients” adds Patrice

Lemongrass Spa has been using botanical ingredients from the start of business! Their philosophy is much different compared to other North American brands. It’s less about promising you a miracle product and more about a step-by-step routine with the goal of long term healing.”

“If you browse through our catalog you will notice that our products are 97-100% NATURAL. I’m particularly excited about our brand and what we offer to our customers. Our skin-care system is a 5 step anti-aging system that heals, regenerates and protects your skin.

The benefits of Castor Oil

Castor beans and oil

A highly versatile vegetable oil, castor oil is obtained by cold pressing the seeds of the castor bean plant (ricinus communis), a native to Africa and India. Castor oil has been used for centuries and is an age-old remedy for medical and beauty maladies. Modern practitioners continue to use castor oil for its therapeutic benefits and as a laxative. It’s one of the first vegetable oils used in industrial applications because of its viscosity and lubricating ability, and is commonly used as a preservative on dry grains to help repel bugs.

Castor oil is extremely diverse and unique in its composition; it is able to withstand high temperatures without breaking down and maintains fluidity at both extremely high and low temperatures. Comprised of 90% ricinoleic acid plus oleic and linoleic fatty acids castor oil provides a myriad of topical benefits and is most known for:

  • Penetrating deep into skin, providing instant hydration and softening.
  • Slowing the signs of aging by helping to stimulate collagen and elastin production.
  • Fighting free radical damage.
  • Acting as a carrier to transport other ingredients to the inner layers of the skin.
  • Castor oil has long been used topically for anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal purposes.
  • Although there are very few studies done in this area, antidotal evidence suggestions castor oil could help slow microbial growth and is often used in wound treatment.

The thick consistency and silky feel of castor oil makes it one of the top natural alternatives to petroleum jelly, making it an excellent option for lip products. Try the Organic Crème Lipstick, Organic Lip Gloss or handcrafted Lip Balm to protect and moisturize delicate skin. Castor oil is commonly used in the manufacturing of soaps because helps create a rich lather; try it in the new Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Soap. Believed to promote healthy circulation, castor oil can be found in products that can help relieve stress and tension such as the Cucumber Foot Soak.

Your step-by-step guide to applying Mineral Makeup

Are you new to mineral makeup? Today many women choosing to put down their bottles of liquid foundation and opt for the light and fluffy dusting of minerals on their skin.

The benefits of mineral makeup are second to none; it’s good for your skin, it’s nourishing, and contains no artificial ingredients. The application of mineral makeup can be a relaxing and enjoyable experience because you are not putting natural ingredients onto your skin; you are pampering it with luxurious mineral infused powders.

Mineral makeup is incredibly easy to apply and finished look brings your best face forward. The long-lasting color gives you countless options for daytime to nighttime looks.

#1. Begin with a clean face!

Start by cleaning your face thoroughly with your usual cleanser , as starting with completely fresh and clean surface is the best way to begin. A gentle exfoliator is usually best if you haven’t got sensitive skin. Leave your skin to settle for a few minutes before taking the next step.

#2. Moisturize!

Minerals like to ‘bond’ and adhere to your skin and if your face is a little on the dry side they may not stick around as long as they’d like too. With clean fingers, ensure you moisturise your face and neck beforehand with a good quality moisturiser. Ensure you wait at least 10 minutes before applying the mineral makeup so the moisturiser can settle into your skin properly.

#3. Mineral Concealer to cover it up!

Begin with your mineral concealer to combat and redness, dark circles, pigmentations or spots. Apply your mineral concealer to the uneven skin tones such as the under eye area and the corners of your nose. Gentle dab the concealer onto the skin and blend it in using light dabbing motions. Concealers should be an unmissable part of your makeup application routine. We love to apply the concealer with a small brush such as this synthetic concealer brush.

#4. Less Makeup is More Natural Beauty!

The great thing about mineral foundation is that a little goes an awful long way. Pour a small amount of the mineral foundation (or eye shadow etc.) into the lid of the pot as this helps avoid using large amounts you don’t need and keeps things tidy too. Once you have done this a few times you will begin to understand the perfect amount you need for optimum coverage.

MINERAL MAKEUP INSIDER TIP: The brush is the most important tool you will use for applying mineral foundation so ensure you invest in an excellent quality one and you will reap the rewards.

#5. Brush is loaded and ready for application!

After your brush is loaded, dab it off on the side of the pot of the sifter jar to dust off any excess powder. Apply the makeup in gentle circular motions on the skin so you get a well evened out coverage and repeat several times all over the face paying attention to all areas including under the chin and near the ears.

#6. Blush or Bronzer for that Rosy Glow!

Now you can add that beautiful blush or bronzer depending on your preference and the occasion. Again, apply the blusher/bronzer to your brush in exactly the same way as the foundation. Using a circular motion apply the blusher to the apples of the cheeks then going upwards towards the ears.

#7. Final touch with a mineral Veil!

Use a mineral veil for a finishing touch after you have applied the foundation and makeup as it will hold the mineral makeup in place for longer and adds to the flawless glow! Makeup will hold much longer with this setting powder so never avoid skipping it, perfection is the key!

So there you have it, you are now fully prepped to be able to apply your mineral makeup effortlessly and perfectly to achieve flawless and beautiful coverage with a few top tips thrown in along the way! Applying mineral makeup is never a chore; it’s a beauty treatment that can be enjoyed by you and your skin.
